Stroop Test: Train concentration and impulse control

The Stroop test is one of the most well-known exercises for concentration and inhibition. Learn how the Stroop effect works and how you benefit from it.

SynapseGym Team

The Stroop test is a classic psychological test from 1935. It measures cognitive flexibility and inhibition control - the ability to suppress automatic reactions. A color word is shown, but written in a different color. Your task: name the color of the text, not the word itself.

The Stroop effect:

Congruent (easy)

RED

BLUE

GREEN

Incongruent (hard)

RED

BLUE

GREEN

Task: Name the COLOR, not the word!

What does the Stroop test train?

The Stroop test trains four key skills: inhibition (suppress automatic reactions), selective attention (ignore irrelevant stimuli), processing speed (think faster), and cognitive control (conscious regulation of thinking). Over 700 scientific studies use the Stroop test.

Inhibition

Suppress automatic reactions

Selective attention

Filter out irrelevant stimuli

Processing speed

Think faster

Cognitive Control

Conscious control of thinking

The Stroop effect in everyday life

The skills trained are needed daily: at work in meetings and multitasking, in sports for reaction speed, while driving for quick decisions. The Stroop effect describes that we take longer when word meaning and color do not match - reading is automatic, and we must actively suppress the impulse.

How to train effectively

For beginners: start slowly with accuracy before speed, short 2-3 minute sessions, daily practice. For advanced: increase pace, longer 5-10 minute sessions, combine different Stroop variants. Optimal training frequency: at least 3x per week, 4-6 weeks for noticeable progress.

Stroop test in SynapseGym

SynapseGym offers a modern, interactive Stroop test with adaptive difficulty, various modes (color names, interference, mixed), detailed statistics, and three difficulty levels. Deep breathing, focusing on the color instead of the word, and regular practice lead to better results.
