Behind every product is a story. SynapseGym was not created on the drawing board, but on an afternoon when I – Jonas, founder of Balane GmbH – was stuck in my own head and asked myself why mental fitness actually has so little space in our daily life. Brain training apps are numerous. Most are expensive, promote miracle effects, and treat cognitive health like a subscription product rather than a way of life. I lacked the honest option: scientifically based, clear in tone, and financially accessible enough that no one has to give up due to 25 euros per month. This page tells how SynapseGym was created, what the app offers today – and why mental fitness is one of the underestimated topics of our time. It is the story of a software designed as a tool for your own life, not as another subscription that you cancel at some point.
Why mental fitness is as important as physical fitness
In the last thirty years, physical health has moved into the spotlight. We run, lift weights, pay attention to sleep and nutrition. Mental fitness, on the other hand, remains a blind spot in most life plans. We invest in sneakers and mattresses, but not in routines that challenge or protect our brains daily. This gap is increasingly becoming a problem. Brain fog, chronic concentration difficulties, mental exhaustion – terms that hardly anyone knew a generation ago are now part of everyday vocabulary. Studies document rising numbers of burnout, attention disorders, and cognitive complaints in almost all age groups. The answer does not lie in a single miracle method, but in a changed attitude: understanding mental fitness as an inherent part of life, just like movement, nutrition, and sleep. SynapseGym is built as a practical tool for exactly this attitude – five to ten minutes daily, without pressure, without streak coercion.
The vision behind SynapseGym
Three convictions shape every decision in the app. First: Substance must be free. Over 20 complete exercises from all major cognitive areas – including bilateral training and mindfulness – are available without a paywall. Most brain training apps lure with a trial session and then charge 15 to 30 euros per month. This makes cognitive health a luxury product. SynapseGym turns this around: substantive content is free, premium includes additional exercises and statistics – for less than a cup of coffee per month. Second: Science must be communicated honestly. We do not promise an intelligence increase of twenty points, no dementia cure, no miracle effects. Instead, we explain what research currently supports – and where it remains open. This honesty is not a given in an industry that often works with exaggerated advertising promises. Third: Mental health knows no language barriers. SynapseGym is therefore available in over 30 languages – whether you live in Berlin, São Paulo, Tokyo, or Nairobi, the app reaches you in your native language.
Who develops SynapseGym
Behind SynapseGym is Balane GmbH based in Munich, an independent software studio. We believe that digital tools should handle users' lifetime with respect – without endless push notifications, without artificial streak losses, without dark patterns. The app is ad-free and only collects what is truly needed for its function. Training data remains on your device by default; cloud synchronization is only available if you actively want it. Our privacy policy documents this in detail. Development is ongoing – based on current research and specific user feedback. New exercises, improvements to the adaptive system, additional languages, and new mindfulness content are released regularly. If you have suggestions, wishes, or criticism, just write to us at contact@balane.tech. We read every feedback. Because in the end, SynapseGym is not an end in itself, but a tool. If it noticeably improves your mental fitness in everyday life, it has fulfilled its job.
